Vivlian of Wyllt – Musings of a Wandering Sage

Sage Vivlian of Wyllt pens the prologues for all books in The Secret Chronicles of Lost Magic. She also writes for our Worlds blog and Epic Fantasy Membership!

As the dawn breaks over yet another foreign landscape, I find myself reflecting on the path that has led me far from the revered halls of the Tower, where I once aspired to serve as chief archivist. My journeys as a travelling sage have taken me to distant lands and brought me into contact with lost magics and ancient knowledge, yet my heart still yearns for the structured sanctity of the archives, where every scroll and tome whispers secrets to those who listen.

My appointment as a travelling sage was, at first, a welcome challenge. To traverse the known world in search of forgotten lore is a task that has filled many pages in our sacred archives with invaluable knowledge. Yet, as the years pass, the allure of delving deeper into the mysteries of magic itself calls to me more persistently with each new discovery. I have studied the ancient texts, observed the rituals of long-lost tribes and civilisations, and witnessed firsthand the remnants of powerful enchantments. And yet, I am acutely aware of the one thing that eludes me--raw talent. Alas, I am not among those who bear the elusive 'Gift'.

While many Tower scholars recognise that magical power is a potential reality for all people, it is nonetheless evident that only those who bear the 'Gift' can truly wield it. Thus, it is a bitter realisation that no amount of study can replace that innate ability. And too few exist who possess this talent, their power flowing as naturally as breath. For me, therefore, magic is something to be observed, catalogued, and studied from afar--a reality that leaves a certain longing in my soul. But I am not without hope. My contributions as a sage are still valuable, even if they are more scholarly than arcane. I continue to diligently write my research, fulfilling the requirements of my role, while quietly harbouring the wish that one day the Tower might recall me to serve in the capacity I once dreamed of.

In the meantime, I have made my residence in a humble stone cottage nestled in the forests near the small town of Dyserth. It is a secluded place, far from the hustle and bustle of larger towns, where I find the solitude necessary to pursue my studies. The winters here are harsh and unforgiving, but they bring a clarity to my thoughts that the milder seasons often do not. I am fortunate to have the loyal companionship of Solomon, a stalwart protector sworn to my service. At thirty years of age, he is in the prime of his life, his strength and skill ensuring that I am safe as I continue my work in these remote regions.

Yet, the growing rift between Church and Tower casts a long shadow over my hope of returning to the Tower...
